Scientists Develop Solar Panels that Work in the Dark

Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory announced today (November 30th) that they have developed and confirmed the design for a new high-efficiency solar cell that utilizes nearly the entire solar spectrum, instead of simply visible light! This solar panel can generate electricity in the absence of direct sunlight, meaning that they can work in the dark! In the past, solar cells have used certain semiconductors to channel and utilize one part of the spectrum. However, this new design uses layers of various materials to make use of nearly the entire solar spectrum!

Berkeley, I love you, we will be reunited soon <3

Solar power from the dark; its possible now.

Will someone make sure Congress gets word of this? Investing in solar tech development IS NOT a dead end prospect.

Every turbine in Germany’s largest offshore wind farm produces 12 times as much energy as the world’s first nuclear power plant.

Germany is the first highly developed, industrialized nation to decide to be dependent on renewable energy in the future. Germany is also the country where nuclear fission was discovered and the internal combustion engine was invented. By 2020 Germany, a country dotted with auto plants, chemical factories and steel mills, is to derive fully one fifth of its power from wind turbines.

If Germany can produce wind farms like that, why can’t we?
