over panic and strange”

Lately, I’ve been rediscovering Merril Garbus’ knack for experimenting in mixtures of sunny pop melodies with lyrics that address social issues.
“Emmylou”- First Aid Kit
The duo’s harmonies are just great. Why doesn’t country music care about First Aid Kit yet?
“Blackberry Stone”- Laura Marling
Its so hard to believe she’s only a year older than I am.
“Where Are the Arms”- Gabriel Kahane
Coming out of the glut of holiday music echoing from the streets and into sifting through end of the year “best of” playlists, I wanted to find someone I haven’t heard before and I came across this Brooklyn composer with classical and singer-songwriter stylings.
You’re going to want to catch his album and his Tiny Desk recording, and if you get as attached to his music like I did, you’ll want to find his show dates too.

“Lights Out, Words Gone”- Bombay Bicycle Club
Drive slow on a sunny, weekend morning near Brighton Beach to this song and watch all anxiety dissipate in the silent streets.
P.S.; completely unrelated to the music but I think I love you, Brooklyn.
“Houghson Boys”- Y La Bamba
“I cant save my own life if I could. I can only save my dreams.”
“Ordinary World”- Simon Le Bon (of Duran Duran) and Luciano Pavarotti
Recorded from the “Children of Bosnia” benefit concert.
Thanks David. You were right, this recording would make me like Duran Duran (a little).
“Time to Pretend”- Jingle Punks Hipster Orchestra (MGMT cover)
The song translates really nicely to string instruments. Who knew?
And yes, when I’m overworked and stressed out by the semester, I run right to classical/orchestral music.
“Layla”- Eric Clapton and Wynton Marsalis
!!!!
When did this happen?
